The Senmei SMQ-III is a multi-tool precision cutting machine designed for short-format paper tubes — the kind of cut that a single-blade cutter handles too slowly for high-volume production. The SMQ-III indexes up to 8 segments per cycle on Ø 50–160 mm tubes up to 600 mm long, with length accuracy below 0.5 mm across every cut.

Minimum cut length is 75 mm, making the SMQ-III the standard cutting station for potato chip cans, nut cans, and short-format industrial cores. Throughput holds at 20–25 pieces per minute. Recipe parameters — blade depth, indexing speed, clamp pressure — are stored per stock and surface on the HMI for fast changeover.

Working principle

How the SMQ-III runs.

Tubes are loaded into the hopper by an operator or upstream spiral winder. A servo-driven feed carriage picks up the longest tube, indexes it to the multi-blade cutting bay, and holds it under clamp pressure. The multi-blade head descends at recipe-controlled depth, indexes along the tube length, and cuts up to 8 segments in a single cycle.

Cut segments are released onto the takeaway conveyor and the carriage indexes to the next tube. Recipe parameters — blade depth, indexing speed, clamp pressure, segment count — are stored per tube diameter and length. The HMI surfaces live production count, reject count, blade life remaining, and current recipe. Blade wear is logged automatically and a service alert fires when it's time to swap.
